House #58Homeless to Homeownership
Imagine you're working your dream job. You travel the high seas on a commercial cruise ship. You are a chef creating delicious meals for guests to enjoy. You even get to sing your heart out performing to the passengers' delight - helping to give people beautiful memories to last a lifetime. Then, suddenly, everything changes! You're engaged in an awful work-related accident, which causes a vertebrae in your neck to pop. Unfortunately, this is Milton's story. It drastically changed the course of his life. His is now disabled and unable to work. With loss of income, he could not afford to pay rent for his apartment. He eventually ended up in a homeless shelter. Then, thankfully, his brother took him into his home. "My brother Freddie took me in. I always can depend on family. I've been living with him for almost three years," says Milton. Although grateful for his brother's generosity, he desired to realize his dream of homeownership. That's when he learned about Habitat for Humanity and prayerfully submitted an application for housing. A month later, he got the call that his application had been approved. "I didn't think I would ever be a homeowner until I walked in the doors of Habitat. I praise God, and thank Habitat for Humanity for making a dream come true. I kept believing that without God I can do nothing. Only when you let go of pride, material things and what people think about you and focus on what God has for you - that's when things begin to open for you." Milton's home is the first two-bedroom small cottage-style home for our local affiliate. This opens doors for individuals and smaller families like Milton. Financial gifts are welcomed to help Habitat successfully continue its building ministry, please donate here. Volunteer alongside Milton at the jobsite.
